Dronfield 10km - Sunday 20th March 2011 (full results) |
Report by Louis Wood
A cool and slightly breezy day, ideal for racing on an undulating 2-lap course, described by one Strider as resembling an Escher painting – you’re going round in circles but you always seem to be going uphill! A fantastic performance by Phil Cooper to win the race, coming in over a minute ahead of the next runner. There were 759 runners in total. The race was a counter in the 2011 Striders Road Race Championships.

Wolf's Pit Fell Race - Sunday 20th March 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
The promised fine day on Sunday turned out not so fine with occasional sprinkles of rain, but that failed to dent the enthusiasm of a record number of entrants into this year's Wolf's Pit Fell Race. A slight modification to the route this year took the sting out of the tail of the race, which made for faster times than the past two years. However, the sting in the start was still there with the 1000' climb to Shatton mast beginning around 400m after the start. I'd forgotten quite how steep this was, and it is near vertical in places with many runners around me resorting to using both hands and feet to get grip. But once over the top of the hill, there's a very pleasant fast run over Offerton Moor, dropping down to just outside Offerton hamlet before a steady climb back up towards the mast. From there it was pretty much all downhill to the finish, which I for one was very thankful for! Myself and Ian Stinson had a competitive race with Ian edging me on the uphills and me doing the reverse downhill. 9 seconds separated us at the finish. A similar battle unfolded between Phil, James and Andy, with Phil eventually taking the honours and Andy just pipped James at the post. A great effort from Adam saw him take club honours and his partner Kate had a stunning first fell race, finishing just behind myself and Ian after leading us up the hill at the start. All in all, a good day and a great race. I confess to being slightly disappointed in the low turnout for a championship race, but hope that participation will improve with the weather.
The winner was Simon Bailey (Mercia) in a time of 37:08. There were 276 finishers. |

Spen 20 - Sunday 13th March 2011 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
Driving up to this race in the pouring rain, the talk was over what gear to wear. Just after the start the rain abated, the wind dropped and the sun came out leaving many over-dressed for this killer with over 1100 foot of climb and a route like the Minotaur's Labyrinth. Winner was David Thompson of Barnsley in 1:58:27 with the last athlete coming home in 272nd place in nearly four and a half hours.

Grindleford Gallop - Saturday 12th March 2011 (full results) |
Report by Trevor Watson
A lovely spring day for a run saw over 300 athletes gathered in a field in Grindleford ready for a mad rush around 21 miles of glorious Peak District countryside. Well, when I say "mad-rush", it was more of a trundle for most of us, and some people even walked it - although as a walkers event too, that's ok. Nevertheless, the countryside on this route is glorious. The route takes in a mix of terrains from open moorland to hard-packed trail - something for most people. It starts with a flat, easy run from Grindleford to Froggat, then goes up the hill to Eyam, cross-country to Great Longstone then along the Monsal Trail to Bakewell. After that, there's a very steep hill up through woods before we enter the Chatsworth Estate and run all the way to Baslow. Finally a tough climb up to Baslow Edge before running along Curbar and Froggatt Edges before a fast descent (for those with the legs) back to Grindleford. All in all, a great race with nearly 3000' of climbing, but made up for with great views - if you could spare the breath to take it in. If you're able to run the Exterminator, then this one - even with the extra 5 miles, should be an easy spring target. The winner was David Riach in a time of 2:26:51. There were 333 finishers

Norton 9 - Sunday 6th March 2011 (full results) |
This is the first of the three excellent road races that Askern host annually, all of which are included in our Road Race Championships. In fact we're not the only club to use them as Knavesmire Harriers (York) have Norton in their race series too. The Beattie clan (Ben, Joanne and Carol) all won prizes whilst Brown managed to get third Male Vet O/50. The only possible complaint might be about the ever growing Askern t-shirt mountain (x3 per year) - all made of cotton and not really that good for training. The 504 finishers were led home by Andrew Pearson of Longwood in 45.09. |

English National X-Country Championships, Alton Towers - Saturday 19th February 2011 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
This must count as one of the more bizarre events that I have taken part in. Without exaggeration, the whole place was a Glastonbury style sea of mud and looking at the finishing times it would be difficult to calculate that the course had been reduced from 12km to 10km. This was to take out the dangerous steep hill on the busy first lap where there had been some nasty, ambulance calling, falls earlier in the day but, to be honest, it was an act of mercy. Nevertheless, the start of this race is a splendid sight with its colourful charge of over 1300 athletes bearing famous vests from all over the country. Well done to everyone who made it through the snow to make this race the celebration of club athletics that it is. Striders team were placed 73rd out of 95 teams who completed the course.
The winner was Steve Vernon (Stockport Harriers) in a time of 35:11. There were 1302 finishers.

Mickleden Straddle Fell Race - Sunday 6th February 2011 (full results) |
A record field of 193 runners completed the 13.8 mile course of the Mickleden Straddle Fell Race. The weather was mild but very, very windy with lots of water underfoot. The wind was full on or across in the long ascent. It was potentiallore dangerous coming back down - trying to resist becoming airborne.
The race was won by Tom Brunt of Holmefirth Harriers in 1:46:27.

Tigger Tor Fell Race - Sunday 30th January 2011 (full results) |
An almost perfect winter's day for a race - cloudy but dry with the temperature hovering just above zero in Dore and a couple of degrees lower out on the local hills, which led to quite a fast race, but also probably contributed to the record 358 finishers (compare that with 308 last year!).
Conditions underfoot were hard but icy in only a few places, with the exception of the two marsh crossing on Burbage which were, as usual, cold and very wet.
As we constantly find in these longer races, competitors took wildly different routes between checkpoints. In a total lapse of concentration at the Oxstones, yours truly ended up following a group over Burbage Moor which went way too far over to the North, near the road. We weren't alone, but a valuable lesson was learnt about concentrating!
We had a great turn out of Striders - 12 in total, which isn't bad for a tough race in January. This was a counter in the club Fell Race Championships.
The winner was Stuart Bond (DPFR )in a time of time was 66:27.

Northern Cross Country Championships - Saturday 29th January 2011 |
Seven Striders drove to Sunderland on 29 January to run in the Northern Cross Country Championships. It was held at a different venue to previous trips to the North East: the parkland site of the former New Herrington colliery and associated works. It was a cold day with hazy sun. The frost covered ground soon cut up and turned into a quagmire in places towards the end of the afternoon. With six of the seven runners counting, Striders finished in 32nd place out of 39 in the senior male team category.
The race was won in 38:09 by Tom Lancashire from Bolton. There were 488 senior male finishers.

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships - Saturday 8th January 2011 (full results) |
Report by Pete Brown
If you thought Graves Park was cold then this was much worse with a stiff breeze to deal with. The course was firm underfoot in most places except for the ditch which was full of water this time and they made the men do and extra lap (compared to the earlier South Yorkshire X-Country race held at the same venue). My diary stated "started at the back and stayed there" whilst the relative positions demonstrate the step up from the South Yorkshire League. Still, another hard run and we did have a finishing men's team (16th). Health warning: these are the official results, there were some late substitutions after the names had been submitted!
The womens race was won by Susan Partridge of Leeds AC in a time of in 22:18; the mens race was won by Jonathan Brownlee from Bingley in a time of 37:05. There were 91 and 224 finishers respectively.
